The Lasses O
by Janet Paisley
directed by John Bett
Of all the celebrations of Robert Burns during the 250th anniversary of his birth, Rowan Tree Theatre Company’s new production, four monologues from The Lasses,O, directed by John Bett, promises to be one of the most joyous, the most unusual, and the most enjoyable for all ages.
But these are definitely not the usual suspects – instead, they range from the midwife who delivered him on a stormy January night, to the young neighbour who nursed him on his deathbed. The stories, in earthy, timeless Scots are ones that shed a new light on their subject, and each one is linked to a song.
In a theatrical tour de force, the award-winning Scots actress Gerda Stevenson, plays all four women. The stories are interwoven with music and song from a trio of versatile musicians, including two members of the up and coming band Shee, Rachel Newton and Lillias Kinsman Blake and cellist/percussionist Seylan Baxter
The production is designed by Jessica Brettle and directed by one of Scotland’s finest directors, John Bett.
